CHERISH Poem for Childrens

A little girl, in rags, with dishevelled hair
A little boy, on a hot pavement, with no shoes to wear
Here a young girl with a sibling on her hips
And there, toiling in sun, a young boy with dry chapped lips
You see them every day, you see them all
On your air-conditioned ride to a café or a mall
Dirty and destitute they seem so odd
Are these the children of a lesser God?
Some come from homes broken -
A run away mother or a drunkard dad
Some from homes that are broke -
Mouths to feed, too many a tad
And then some that just need a break -
Away from homes they’ve just gone bad
Not enough food, no school and nowhere to play
These are mere children, don’t they have a right to be gay?
Burdened and bent, often with travails of adulthood
Don’t these kids deserve an innocent childhood?
No fault of theirs yet lives slipshod
Are these the children of a lesser God?
Like lotuses from a dirty pond
They too with support can flourish
All they need is a caring bond
They too are the lives that we must CHERISH
*’Children of a lesser God’ is a borrowed phrase
